Well, all treatments depend on how the clients body reacts to them. Acupuncture has worked but however is not endorsed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The only way to find out is to try it, it was kinda discovered with opium withdrawals, semi relevant to pain meds.

Acupuncture can be beneficial for someone with chronic pain, but many times the after-effects for new acupuncture patients are as painful, if not more painful, than the initial pain. This happens because acupuncture is usually used directly on the affected area of pain. Until your body (muscles, ligaments, etc.) can get used to the new therapy it will cause some discomfort. I have heard patients claim that acupuncture did relieve their pain, but only after a few proceedures had been done. So, if you can handle the first few therapies, hold on, because there may be hope down the road.

My husband is on tramal, and we have been told that you have to ween yourself off it by gradually cutting back and taking time for the levels of tramal to drop in your body. I have heard that acupuncture and even some kinds of massage therapy can help, but you need to detox your body as well to lower the levels of tramal in your system that have built up. It depends on how long you have used it and how many pills you take a day

Normal results from acupuncture are relief of pain and/ or improvement of the condition being treated. As is true with other forms of medical treatment, a minority of patients do not respond to acupuncture. The reasons for nonresponsiveness are not known at the present stage of research. The purpose of acupuncture in TCM is the rebalancing of opposing energy forces in different parts of the body. In Western terms, acupuncture is used most commonly as an adjunctive treatment for the relief of chronic or acute pain. In the United States, acupuncture is most widely used to treat pain associated with musculoskeletal disorders, but it has also been used in the treatment of headaches, other painful disorders, and nausea and vomiting. In addition to these disorders, acupuncture has been used to treat a variety of disorders such as asthma, infertility, depression, anxiety, HIV infection, and fibromyalgia, although its efficacy in relieving these disorders is largely unproven. Acupuncture should not be used to treat traumatic injuries and other emergency conditions requiring immediate surgery. Also, while it appears to have benefits in relieving symptoms such as pain under the proper circumstances, it has not been shown to alter the underlying course of a disease. The exact mechanism by which acupuncture works is not known. Studies have demonstrated a variety of physiologic effects such as release in the brain of various chemicals and hormones, alteration of immune function, blood pressure, and body temperature.
