Acupuncture can be an effective treatment for many types of back pain. However, it is not a cure-all for every type of back pain. If you have a severely herniated vertebral disc often times pain relief is minimal or short lived. Back pain for 2 weeks that has caused you to miss work during that time should be assessed by a primary care physician, or pain specialist, to rule out structural damage like herniation. If it turns out to be a mild herniation, acupuncture may still be a good treatment route. Acupuncture is also analogous to Physical Therapy in that it is not a one treatment fix. For acute back pain (w/ o severe structural deviations) I would expect 2 treatments per week for 2 to 3 weeks. During this time you should see steady improvement as the treatment plan progresses. The first week expect to still have some pain, but greater function. Second week should garner significant reductions in pain and greater range of motion, and so on. |
