Acupuncture for depression?

Question: Acupuncture for depression?

(Posted by: CNHoov20 on 2010-02-06 17:18:16)

I would like to know if anyone has tried acupuncture in helping to treat their depression. What are some of your experiences with the topic?

There are 3 disciplines that Chinese Medicine has been using for 5,000 years with great success. Herbal medicine, chiropractic, and acupuncture. Western medicine, for the most part, have rejected thousands of years of successful practices and relied on treating the body as separate parts that are essentially operating independently of each other for the most part. Chinese medicine looks at the body as a system with balance being the primary issue. Research has shown that many of the acupuncture points have a dramatically reduced electrical resistance compared with the surrounding skin (10 kilo-ohms and 3 mega-ohms, respectively). Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Becker, who has done a great deal of research on electromagnetic energy fields in the body, designed a special electrode recording device that rolls along the body like a pizza cutter. His many studies have shown electrical charges on every one of the people tested corresponding to the Chinese meridian points. If acupuncture is used in combination with other disciplines, it may be able to contribute toward the depression issue. The root cause of depression is mineral deficiencies and traumas, especially psychological traumas. For anyone to say acupuncture does not work is certainly not informed. Just using common sense, doesn't it seem logical that after 5,000 years of using something, why would anyone continue to use it if it didn't work? To see a person have an operation, feel no pain, and only use acupuncture to be used to deaden the nerves with no anesthesia is simply amazing and further proof this technology works. I've never seen anyone that was deficient in a drug and to use drugs for depression has become a "designer treatment. " In some cases, short term use of drugs can be advised, but long term use of drugs that is "MAKE BELIEVE HEALTH " without determining the root cause and addressing that is not wise. Studies done by the World Health Organization and American universities seem to disagree with the obscure, drug company sponsored Australian group "nbci - pubmed " that says Acupuncture does not work and the World Health Organization has actually approved it for use with depression. Since the early nineties, studies around the globe have suggested that treating depression with acupuncture has a positive and holistic effect on depressed patients, particularly when used in combination with psychotherapy and herbal treatments. Psychologist John Allen, from the University of Arizona in Tucson, and Acupuncturist Rosa Schnyer, conducted the very first pilot controlled study on treating depression symptoms with acupuncture in the Western scientific world. In a double blind randomized study, 34 depressed female patients who met the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria were assigned to one of three treatment groups for eight weeks. The first group received acupuncture treatment specifically tailored to their depression symptoms. The second group received a general acupuncture treatment not specific to depression, and the third group was placed on a waiting list for acupuncture treatment, but received no treatment. The study found that those in the tailored acupuncture treatment experienced a significant reduction in symptoms, compared to those in the non-specific treatment. Moreover, over 50% of the participants no longer met the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for depression after the study. The study findings suggest that using acupuncture alone could be as effective as other types of treatments for relieving depression symptoms typically used in Western medicine, such as psychotherapy and drugs. While these results are promising and the United Nations World Health Organization has approved acupuncture as a treatment for depression, further clinical trials with larger samples are deemed necessary to endorse this new hope for relief. good luck to you

Acupuncture is a bogus treatment that doesn't work for anything really. The best that can be said is there is weak evidence it might be effective for mild to moderate pain or nausea in some people. There is no evidence it is of ANY use in depression. But, don't take my word for it, here is a recently published review of ALL the literature on acupuncture and depression. This is as current as it gets ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ pubmed/ 20091556?itool= EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum &ordinalpos= 2 ----------------- EDIT. Of course, thumbs down for the most current and accurate information on acupuncture and smoking cessation.

Acupuncture is available in all the best hospitals in Boston where I live. It is not painful and it can't hurt to ty it. I quit smoking , started again and my doctor suggested I give it a try to stop smoking. It is good for many things.

I have a friend of mine that had pain in his neck for years and doctors could do nothing to stop it. The doctors were helpful in addicting him to pain killers though. he was finally cured of it with one visit to a acupuncturist. Acupuncture works! But the wanna be doctors here when beg to differ due to monetary gain.

Acupuncture is quack treatment with no proof that it works. Don't waste your money.
