Is there a form of landscaping that tries to go for a natural looking scene?

Question: Is there a form of landscaping that tries to go for a natural looking scene?

Most landscaping seems very contrived and unnatural. Trees in a row, cement barriers, etc. Is there a form of landscaping that goes for a more natural feel and if so, what is it called?

Some call it native gardening. Many of our neighbors call it natural environment or just a lot less work. There is no grass to deal with except native grass that takes care of itself. No leaves to rake, they just lay and rot.

It has been fashionable to design gardens in a very neat formal way. This style has been around for centuries and when well done can look very good. The latest look is a more involved layered look. Sometimes landscaping is done to a price and the same plants, and easy design are done over and over at many properties. Cheap and easy for the landscaper. The more involved the design the more plants and cost to build and someone has to actually sit down and do a design. These are all costs that many people today are not prepared to pay they usually want cheap and quick. If you want something different you would be better to engage a designer, give them your brief and have your garden designed to your taste. Then have it built by a landscaper. It will cost a bit more but you will end up with exactly what you want.

Of course. you just have to find, and pay the right contractor. it,s called zero scaping. using native plants to blend with the environment.

If you are a gardner and would like to take the project on yourself, I dont see why you can't do this. Yes, landscaping can recreate the look of a natural setting. Begin by doing a little online research on natural landscaping. You need to choose the type natural setting you hope to recreate. Also consider checking out natural areas near where you live, to get a feel for what kinds of plants grow best in your area, and the the kind of natural scene you want to do. It is best to stay near what really is natural in your area, and therefore compatable with your local climate and soil condtions. Ie, don't try to recreate an alpine meadow is you live in tropical south Florida, or a lush tropical Florida Everglades scene is you live in arid desert Nevada. Online resources can help you find local sources of plants native to your area, and nurseries specializing in native plants will be able to guide you in selecting plants compatable with your location. If you have something a bit more structured in mind, take a look at oriental gardens. They are very meticulously planned and designed, but the effect of of graceful and often naturally flowing lines, offering a peaceful elegance.
